Torup Castle and Garden is one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in the Nordic countries. The castle is surrounded by a magnificent castle park with traces from five centuries and a lush beech forest.
The castle park has been a popular destination for recreation for several decades. The foundation of the park’s current appearance dates back to the early 1800s when the owner family Coyet reintroduced water as an important element and established a walkway system connecting the castle to the surroundings. In addition to many exotic trees such as tulip tree, chinese Sequoia, sycamores, chestnuts, lilacs, acacias, real chestnuts and quinces, there is also a remarkable specimen of naver maple and several walnut trees. Behind the castle you will find a hidden oasis, the recently restored walled garden from the beginning of the 20th century. The grass of the open fields is grazed by sheep and cut by horse power. The care of the park is carried out whenever possible with artisanal methods, which also become experiences for our visitors.
Torup Castle has been owned, managed and activated by the city of Malmö since 1970. The property’s area of approx. 610 hectares consists of the area around the castle with a castle park and traditional settlement with outbuildings and an adjacent beech forest, which partly forms a nature reserve of 365 hectares. The castle was built in the 1530s-1540s in red brick and gray stone by Mrs. Görvel Fadersdotter Sparre. The interiors of the castle are characterized by the later centuries, especially by the classic Swedish castle interiors but also by inspiration from the aesthetics of the Arts & Crafts movement. Even today, several of the castle’s rooms and their views interact with the various older elements out in the castle park.
The castle park is open to the public with free admission all year round: from 1 May to 30 October from 8 am to 8 pm and from 1 November to 30 April from 8 am to 6 pm.
Guided tours are offered in the castle during most of the year and in the castle park during the season. Cultural events linked to the place’s core values are offered spread throughout the year.
The restored stone barn nearby the castle park houses Entré Torup, an InfoPoint and shop for visitors run by the city of Malmö, and the Castle Café.
