The river Umeåälven’s beaches with their parks, green areas and walkways comprise Umeå’s city park. The content is varied and there is a broad range with many experiences. The city hall park, Rådhusparken, manifests the city’s meetings with the river in a green riverside park square where generous wooden decks, riverside grass areas and hanging furniture are filled by Umeå’s residents and visitors during the outdoor season. In its oldest areas, the park’s summer flower beds and central theme have a clear historical connection. A narrow lane and a 150 m long retaining wall of recycled quay stone have enabled Årstidernas park, a green oasis on the river Umeåälven’s beach with changing flower beds, play areas and the equality area ‘Frizon.’ A clear form and durable materials provide a permissive place for everything from dancing on the pier to children’s parties. Broparken is the modern city park where city cultivation, parkour, temporary markets and sunbathers gather and fill the park with life. The skate park ‘Sparken’ is located below one of Umeå’s bridges, now a well-frequented meeting place. ‘Sparken’ was designed in collaboration with the youths of Umeå, but the residents of Umeå have also been involved in different ways in the design of the other parks. The range of parks is supplemented with promenades, riverside green areas such as Bölesholm and forests close to the city such as Stadsliden.
