Gothenburg Botanical Garden houses 16,000 plant species on 175 hectares and is one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe and even considered one of the best.
The scientific collections are displayed in beautiful garden spaces uniting expertise and beauty. The garden’s first director was the famous explorer and botanist Carl Skottsberg.

The gardens plant collections derive mainly from numerous plant collecting expeditions worldwide. The collection of wild bulbs and tubers are of world class and ablaze with colour in the Bulb Garden, Spring Meadow and in the award-winning Rock Garden during the spring. Whilst most botanical gardens in Europe have been laid out in flat areas in towns, Gothenburg Botanical Garden was created in a nature reserve which is naturally hilly, providing a varied landscape. Here the boundaries between wildlife and the cultivated garden are often diffuse. This is particularly noticeable in the rock garden with its 4000 species from around the world. Here you´ll also find an area where you can study Scandinavian plants. One of the main purposes of this collection is to preserve plants in danger of extinction due to environmental changes.

The greenhouses hold Sweden’s largest collection of tropical orchids. Here you can also find the Easter Island Tree which is extinct in the wild but preserved and distributed thanks to Gothenburg Botanical Garden. There is also a unique collection of Dionysia which are extremely difficult to cultivate, originating mainly from Afghanistan and Iran.

The garden has extensive public and educational activities and works closely with the University of Gothenburg. With 600,000 visitors each year the Gothenburg Botanical Garden is one of the regions foremost attractions.

The Botanical Garden is open everyday 24/7. There is a restaurant and a shop where you can find maps and brochures in several languages. You can also download the application Botaniska for a guided tour around the garden.
